THE WORD IN MY HEART

Reading It. Meditating on It. Declaring It. Living It.

"What is a phrase, piece of advice, or song lyric someone told you years ago that still pops into
your head today? Why do you think it stuck?"

Our minds constantly repeat what we feed them—past mistakes, words spoken over us by others,
or our own fears. Today, we are looking at what happens when we intentionally replace those
default thoughts with the Word of God, and why His Word carries power that human words
never can.

There is something powerful about God's Word. The Bible isn't just a book filled with stories
about people who lived a long time ago. It is the Word of God. And when we begin putting
God's Word into our hearts, allowing it to shape our thoughts, meditating on it, declaring it, and
living according to it, God's Word begins to change the way we see ourselves, our
circumstances, and our future. Today we're going to look at what it means to get God's Word
into us until His truth begins to come out of us.

GOD'S WORD IS MEANT TO LIVE IN US

Colossians 3:16 - “Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives.”

Notice that Paul doesn't say to let God's Word occasionally visit your life. He says to let it fill
your lives. There is a difference between having a Bible and having the Word of God living
inside your heart. You can own ten Bibles and still not have God's Word changing the way you
think. But when Scripture begins to fill your heart, it becomes available when you need it.

God’s Word is there when fear, temptation, discouragement, anger, or any other emotions we
face come. When you don't know what to do, God's Word gives you direction. The goal isn't
simply to read the Bible. The goal is to let the Bible get inside of you.

HIDE GOD'S WORD IN YOUR HEART

Psalm 119:11 - “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

The psalmist understood something important: What you put inside your heart will eventually
influence what comes out of your life. When you hide God's Word in your heart, His truth
becomes available when you need it.

Think about Jesus when He was tempted in the wilderness.

He didn't fight temptation with His feelings. He answered the enemy with: “It is written…”
Jesus knew the Word. He had the Word available when He needed it. That's why memorizing
Scripture can be so powerful. You may not always have a Bible in your hand. But if you've put
God's Word in your heart, you carry it with you.

MEDITATING ON GOD'S WORD

In Joshua 1:8 God instructed Joshua to study His Book of Instruction continually and to
meditate on it day and night. But what does it mean to meditate on Scripture? Meditation isn't
emptying your mind. Biblical meditation means filling your mind with God's truth and
thinking deeply about it. Instead of simply reading: “God is my refuge.” Stop and think: What
does that mean? What does this mean for me in my current situation? How can I apply this
to my life? Meditation means taking Scripture from: the page → into your thoughts → into
your heart → into your life.

WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT MATTERS

In Philippians 4:8 Paul tells believers to fix their thoughts on things that are true, honorable,
right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise. Our minds can become
battlefields. Especially when we're dealing with regret, shame, fear, anger, loneliness, rejection,
uncertainty, or memories of our past. The enemy would love for us to replay the same negative
thoughts over and over. But God's Word gives us something different to meditate on. Instead of:
“I'm worthless.” God's Word says you are wonderfully made. Instead of: “I'm forgotten.”
God's Word reminds you that God sees you. Instead of: “My past is all I am.” God's Word tells
you that in Christ, you are a new creation. Instead of: “There is no future for me.” God's Word
reminds you that God is still able to do something new. What you repeatedly think about will
influence how you live. So, fill your mind with truth.

GOD'S WORD TRANSFORMS US

Romans 12:2 tells us “Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you
think.”

Transformation begins with the renewing of our minds. God doesn't simply want to change our
behavior. He wants to change us. Sometimes we try to change our lives from the outside in. God
often works from the inside out. He changes what we believe. He changes how we think. He
changes what we desire. He changes how we respond. And eventually those internal changes
begin showing up in our behavior. God's Word changes the way we think. The way we think
changes the way we live. And the way we live begins to change our future.

GOD'S WORD IS A MIRROR

In James 1:22-25 James compares God's Word to looking into a mirror. A mirror shows us what
we actually look like. God's Word does something similar. It shows us: Who God is. Who we
are. What needs to change. What needs to be surrendered. Where we've been deceived.
What God wants to develop in us. But imagine looking in a mirror, seeing something that
needs attention, and then walking away without doing anything about it. That's what James
warns us against. Don't just hear the Word. Let the Word change you.

DECLARE GOD'S WORD

There is a difference between simply reading Scripture and declaring Scripture. To declare
God's Word means to speak aloud what God has already said. We aren't trying to manipulate
God. We aren't creating our own reality. We aren't telling God what He must do. We are
bringing our words into agreement with His truth. Whatever you are facing right now, you can
declare the Word of God over it. The Bible tells us in Genesis that in the beginning God said
“Let there be light”, and light appeared. Our words have power and speaking the Word of God is
even more powerful. When fear says: “I'm alone.” I can declare: “God has said He will never
leave me or abandon me.” When shame says: “I'm worthless.” I can declare: “I am God's
workmanship.” When I feel weak: “I can do everything through Christ, who gives me
strength.” When I don't know what to do: “God promises to give wisdom to those who ask
Him.” I don't have to let my circumstances write the script. I can speak the truth of God's
Word into my circumstances.

GOD'S WORD DOES NOT RETURN VOID

Isaiah 55:10-11 tells us God says that just as rain and snow cause the earth to produce, His
Word accomplishes what He sends it to do. This is a powerful promise. When you speak God's
Word, you may not see an immediate result. You may pray for someone and see no change. You
may declare a promise and your circumstances may look exactly the same. You may read
Scripture every day and wonder if anything is happening. But God's Word is not powerless.

God's Word accomplishes His purposes. Sometimes the first thing God's Word changes is you.
You read about forgiveness—and God begins changing your heart. You read about patience—
and God begins developing patience in you. You read about faith—and your fear begins losing
its grip. You read about God's faithfulness—and you begin trusting Him differently. You may
not see everything happening immediately. But that doesn't mean nothing is happening. Don't
measure the power of God's Word by what you can see today.

PLANT THE WORD LIKE A SEED

Think about a seed. When you plant a seed in the ground, you don't dig it up every few hours to
see whether it is growing. You water it. You wait. You trust the process. God's Word can work
the same way in our hearts. You read it. You meditate on it. You declare it. You believe it. You
obey it. And you allow God to produce the fruit. Sometimes you're going to walk away from
Bible study and feel nothing dramatic. That's okay. The Word has still been planted. Keep
watering it. Keep speaking it. Keep believing it. Keep living it.

DON'T JUST DECLARE IT—LIVE IT

James 1:22 tells us “But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says.” This is
where the Word becomes powerful in our everyday lives. If Scripture says forgive, we learn to
forgive. If Scripture says love, we learn to love. If Scripture says tell the truth, we tell the truth. If
Scripture says control our tongue, we watch our words. If Scripture says trust God, we learn to
trust Him. If Scripture says turn away from sin, we turn. God's Word isn't simply information.
It's an invitation to transformation.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE WORD GETS IN YOU?

When God's Word begins taking root in your heart: Fear can be replaced with faith. Shame
can be replaced with identity. Bitterness can be replaced with forgiveness. Hopelessness can
be replaced with hope. Confusion can be replaced with truth. Anger can be replaced with
self-control. Despair can be replaced with God's promises. Old thinking can be replaced
with a renewed mind. And slowly, sometimes so gradually that you don't even notice it at first,
you begin becoming different.

One day you realize: “I don't react the way I used to.” “I don't think the way I used to.” “I
don't want the things I used to want.” “I'm not the woman I used to be.” That's
transformation.

WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY

There will be moments when you don't know what to pray. There will be moments when you
don't know what to declare. There will be moments when your emotions are overwhelming.
That's when you can open your Bible. Find a Scripture that speaks to what you're facing. Then
pray it. Speak it. Write it. Memorize it. Carry it with you. Let God's Word give you the words
when you don't have your own.

CLOSING THOUGHT

The Word of God is not meant to sit on a shelf. It is meant to get into your heart. Read it.
Receive it. Meditate on it. Believe it. Declare it. Obey it. Live it.

There may be things about your circumstances that you cannot change today. You may not be
able to change your current situation. You may not be able to change what someone else does.
You may not be able to change what happened yesterday. But you can decide what you are going
to allow God's Word to do inside of you today. The world may have labeled you. Your past may
have labeled you. Other people may have spoken words over you. But God's Word gets the final
say about who you are in Christ.

And when you continually put His Word into your heart, meditate on His truth, speak His
promises, and live according to what He says, His Word begins to transform you from the inside
out. You may be behind bars, but God's Word is not behind bars. You may be confined
physically, but the Word of God is free to work in your heart. And the Word God sends
forth will accomplish His purposes.

“ONE VERSE. ONE WEEK.” Challenge

Choose one Scripture. For seven days: Read it in the morning. Write it down. Meditate on it.
Speak it aloud. Pray it. Look for opportunities to live it. Speak it again when the opposite
emotion or thought comes. At the end of the week, ask yourself: What has changed in me?
Not just: “Did my circumstances change?” But: “Did God's Word change me?”

CLOSING PRAYER

Father,

Thank You for Your Word. Thank You that Your Word is truth, that it gives me wisdom,
direction, correction, encouragement, hope, and life. Lord, help me not to simply read Your
Word and close the Bible. Help me hide Your Word in my heart. Teach me how to meditate on
it. Bring Your Scriptures back to my mind when I need them. When fear comes, remind me of
Your promises. When shame comes, remind me of who You say I am. When temptation comes,
bring Your truth to my remembrance. When I feel hopeless, remind me of Your faithfulness.

When I don't know what to say, put Your Word in my mouth. Teach me to declare Your truth—
not because my words have power apart from You, but because Your Word is powerful and
true. Help me speak what You have spoken. Help me believe what You have said. And most
importantly, help me live what Your Word teaches.

Let Your Word transform my mind, my heart, my attitude, my choices, my relationships, and my
life. When I cannot see the results immediately, help me trust that Your Word is still working.
Your Word does not return empty. It accomplishes what You send it to accomplish. So today, I
choose to plant Your Word deep in my heart. I will read it. I will meditate on it. I will declare it.
I will obey it. And I will trust You with the fruit.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
